Michael Flynn

Page history last edited by CK 1 year, 9 months ago

Michael Thomas "Mike" Flynn (born December 1958) is a retired United States Army lieutenant general who was the eighteenth director of the Defense Intelligence Agency and the first national security advisor appointed by President Donald Trump. Flynn served as the twenty-fifth national security advisor from January 20, 2017, to February 13, 2017. He was forced to resign after information surfaced he had misled Vice President Mike Pence about the nature and content of his communications with the Russian ambassador to the U.S., Sergey Kislyak. Flynn's tenure of just 24 days as national security advisor is the shortest in the history of the office.

On December 1, 2017, Flynn appeared in federal court to formalize a deal with Special Counsel Robert Mueller to plead guilty to a single felony count of "willfully and knowingly" making "false, fictitious and fraudulent statements" to the FBI.

Associations with Putin

Violation of Emoluments Clause

The Army has been investigating whether Mr. Flynn received money from the Russian government during a trip he took to Moscow in 2015, according to two defense officials. Such a payment might violate the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution, which prohibits former military officers from receiving money from a foreign government without consent from Congress. The defense officials said there was no record that Mr. Flynn, a retired three-star Army general, filed the required paperwork for the trip. (3)

Vulnerability to blackmail

The Justice Department warned the Trump administration that Michael Flynn misled administration officials regarding his communications with the Russian ambassador to the United States and was potentially vulnerable to blackmail by the Russians, a person familiar with the matter told CNN. The message was delivered by then-Acting Attorney General Sally Yates. Other top intelligence officials, including James Clapper and John Brennan, were in agreement the White House should be alerted about the concerns. (4)

Shifting stance on immunity from prosecution

* Michael Flynn made an offer to cooperate with congressional investigators in exchange for immunity from prosecution. (5)

* Flynn has previously said though, that “When you are given immunity, that means you probably committed a crime,” (5)

Cited for unauthorized foreign payments

Michael Flynn, the retired Army general and onetime adviser to President Donald Trump, was cited by the Defense Department inspector general for failing to disclose lucrative speaking engagements and other business arrangements with foreign entities, prompting the U.S. government to pursue tens of thousands of dollars in penalties against him, according to documents.

Investigators determined that Flynn received nearly $450,000 from Turkish and Russian interests in 2015, including for an appearance in Moscow alongside President Vladimir Putin, but found no records that he had sought government approval beforehand. Their findings are detailed in a January 2021 memo to the Army released through the Freedom of Information Act on Thursday. (8)

Islamophobia

Eliminationism

The man whom President-elect Donald Trump picked as his national security adviser has said he doesn’t believe that all cultures are “morally equivalent” and once described Islam as "a cancer," comments that have many in the Muslim community worried about what his new job might mean for them. (6)

Literal fear of Muslims

He stated in a Twitter post that "fear of Muslims is RATIONAL" (6)

Unsubstantiated claim about "Muslim signs" on the border

Retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, Donald Trump's pick to be his national security adviser, claimed in an August radio interview with Breitbart News that Arabic signs were present along the United States border with Mexico to guide potential state-sponsored terrorists and "radicalized Muslims" into the United States. No evidence of these signs were ever provided by Flynn, a CNN KFile review of available information about the terror threat along the US-Mexico border could not corroborate Flynn's claim, CNN's KFile asked Flynn for clarification about the Arabic signs but received no reply, a Trump transition spokesman declined to comment, a spokesperson for the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) "respectfully" declined to comment, and Shawn Moran, a vice president at the National Border Patrol Council, the labor union of border patrol agents that endorsed Trump, told CNN's KFile the group was not aware of the signs Flynn referenced.
